Bernard Hardwood Floors installs and refinishes hardwood stair flooring in Irving, TX and across Dallas-Fort Worth. Stairs take more wear than any floor in the house. Every trip up and down hits the same spot on each tread, so the finish wears through there first. We have worked on wood floors in North Texas homes since 1999, and stairs are some of the most careful work we do.

What we do on hardwood stairs
Most stair calls fall into one of four jobs. We tell you which one fits after we look at your stairs.
- New hardwood treads and risers. We fit new treads and risers to your stairs, cut to the shape of each step.
- Carpet to hardwood stairs. We pull the old carpet and pad, take off the tack strips and staples, and put real wood treads on the steps.
- Stair refinishing. We sand worn treads down to bare wood and put a new stain and finish on them.
- Stair repairs. We replace a cracked or split tread and match it to the rest of the staircase.
If the floor at the top or bottom of the stairs also looks tired, we can do both in one project. See our hardwood floor installation and hardwood floor refinishing pages for the floor side of the job.
Matching your stairs to your floors
Stairs look wrong when they do not match the floor they connect to. The wood species, the stain color and the sheen all have to line up. We match the stain on site and show you the color on your own wood before we finish the stairs.
One Irving-area homeowner put it this way in a Google review: “outstanding job on my second floor and stairway hardwood installation. The low VOC stain was a very close match to my existing main floor.” Another wrote: “Aldo and his team did a fantastic job restoring my wooden stair treads. They look brand new!”
We use low-VOC, fast-drying finishes, so there is less smell in the house while the stairs cure.
How a stair job works
- We look at your stairs. We check the treads, risers, nosing and the floor at each end.
- You get a written quote. It lists the work, the wood and the finish before anything starts.
- We protect your home. Walls, rails and balusters get covered, and our dustless sanding system keeps the dust down.
- We install or sand. New treads and risers go in, or the old treads are sanded to bare wood.
- We stain and seal. You approve the color, then we apply the finish and walk the stairs with you.
Refinish or replace your stair treads
If your treads are solid wood with scratches, dull spots or a worn path, refinishing is usually enough. If treads are cracked, loose, too thin to sand, or covered in carpet with rough plywood under it, new treads make more sense. Small damage on one or two steps can often be fixed with a hardwood floor repair. For the full sand, stain and seal process, see sand and finish.

Questions about hardwood stairs
Can you put hardwood on stairs that have carpet now?
Yes. This is one of the most common stair jobs we do in Irving. We remove the carpet, the pad, the tack strips and every staple. Then we look at what is under it. Some stairs have solid wood treads that only need sanding and a finish. Many have rough plywood or particleboard steps that were never meant to show. In that case we install new hardwood treads and risers over the steps. We tell you which one you have after the carpet comes up, and the quote covers both cases so there are no surprises.
How long does it take to redo a staircase?
It depends on the number of steps, whether we are installing new treads or refinishing old ones, and how many coats of finish your stairs need. Stain and finish also need time to dry between coats. A simple refinish goes faster than a full carpet-to-hardwood conversion with new treads and risers. We give you the schedule in writing with your quote, so you know which days the stairs will be off limits. If the floors at the top or bottom are part of the job, we plan the stairs and floors together.
Can you match my stairs to my hardwood floors?
Yes. Matching is the most important part of a stair job, because the stairs meet the floor at the top and the bottom. We match the wood species, the stain color and the sheen. Before we finish, we put the stain on your own wood so you can see the real color, not a color on a card. Our customers mention this in their reviews, including one who wrote that the stain on their new stairway was a very close match to the existing main floor.
Should I refinish my stair treads or replace them?
Refinish them if they are solid wood and the damage is on the surface: scratches, dull finish, a worn path down the middle or small dents. Replace them if a tread is cracked, loose, too thin to sand again, or if the steps under your carpet are plywood or particleboard. Many staircases need a mix. We may refinish most treads and replace one or two that are damaged. We walk you through what we see on each step before we write the quote, so you only pay for the work your stairs need.
What wood do you use for stair treads?
Most homes in Dallas-Fort Worth have red oak or white oak floors, so those are the woods we use most often for treads. We pick the species that matches your floor so the stain takes the same way on both. If you are putting new hardwood on the floors and the stairs at the same time, we use the same wood for both. Tell us if you want a different look, such as a darker tread with painted risers, and we will plan the materials around it.
Do the risers have to be wood too?
No. Risers are the flat, upright part of each step. Many homeowners pick stained wood risers that match the treads. Others pick white or painted risers, which make the treads stand out and give the stairs a clean look. Both are common in Irving homes. Painted risers also hide scuffs from shoes better than stained ones. We talk through the look you want during the estimate and list the riser choice in the written quote, so there is no guessing on install day.
Can I use my stairs while you work on them?
Plan on the stairs being off limits while the stain and finish dry. Wet finish does not hold up to foot traffic, and walking on it too soon leaves marks that need to be sanded out. We plan the work around the way your family uses the house and tell you ahead of time which days the stairs are closed. If your home has a second staircase or the bedrooms are on the first floor, the job is easier. We cover this in the quote so the schedule is clear.
Is sanding stairs messy?
Sanding makes fine dust, and stairs are hard to contain because they open to two floors. We use a dustless sanding system that captures dust at the source, and we cover the walls, rails and balusters before we start. Corners and edges on stairs are often sanded by hand, which keeps the work careful around the nosing and the trim. You can read more about how we keep homes clean on our dustless floor sanding page. Most homeowners are surprised by how little cleanup there is.
Do you fix squeaky or loose stair treads?
Often, yes. A squeak usually means a tread has come loose from the stair below it and rubs when someone steps on it. When we refinish or install treads, we check each step and fasten loose treads before the finish goes on. A tread that is cracked or split gets replaced. Some squeaks come from the frame under the stairs, and those can take more work to reach. We point out every loose or noisy step during the estimate and tell you what we can fix as part of the job.
